Welcome to this website and also to the many charms of South Sligo in the north west of Ireland. We hope you will find a sense of place here and we hope you will also discover a sense of community.
This website has a number of functions. Quite apart from its primary role of promoting the concept of a greenway for County Sligo, this site is also:
A location where membership is available
A contact/information point
A showcase for our region
This region is rich in culture, tradition and natural beauty. A modern greenway will provide the perfect link to our many attractions. A greenway will create a great new local amenity while vastly improving the experience of visitors to County Sligo. Another positive contribution that the greenway will bring is the boost to local businesses.
The need is economic recovery and the provision of a local amenity and tourist attraction. The opportunity is the abandoned railway and the funding that is in place for its development. The challenge is for all of us to work together to make it happen and without further delay.

Our Mission
The mission of Sligo Greenway Co-Op is to reclaim the stretch of disused railway from Collooney to Bellaghy (Charlestown) with the aim of seeing it develop into a greenway - a walkway, cycleway and tourism trail - a public amenity and a valuable resource with social, cultural and, most importantly, economic benefits for the entire region.
The Benefits The benefits of a Sligo Greenway are twofold:
It will add to the attractiveness of the area by providing new perspectives and access to many of the existing natural ,cultural and archaeological features of South Sligo;
It will also go some way to arresting the economic decline in this rural area and help to restore viability to many of the small businesses, towns and villages along the route.
Our Goal
Since our launch in mid 2015, 500 people have signed up as shareholders in Sligo Greenway Co-Op Ltd. Such an enthusiastic and passionate response shows that there is widespread support for this project; Our Goal is to enlist the support of 1,200 members. This will give the Co-Op a substantial presence and a strong voice - essential components in both our public awareness campaign and in our efforts to support our elected representatives in their work to help us achieve our Mission.
